$51,500 APPROVED FOR

TEMPORARY SENIOR CENTER.

by KIMBERLY BLAKER

Discussion of the temporary senior center was among sev- eral items on the agenda for the February 14, Huron Township Board meeting.

Trustee Marlene Krause made a motion for work to begin immediately on the Krzyske Center, which would be renovated for use as a tem- porary senior center.

The Department of public works had submitted a bid for

$3,200 to remove the overhead door, brick the opening, and install a picture window. The bid also included making an office for the senior director, replacing windows, and paint- ing.

Trustee Nora Adkins also asked a number of questions. She asked that the seniors in the audience give their input on the center. She asked where the money is coming from. She also wanted to know what would be done with the

LANGUAGE ART

by KIMBERLY BLAKER

Sixth grade students in Amy Kidd-Shoenbach’s language arts class decided to show their stuff recently.

Students entered a technolo- gy/writing contest sponsored by Toshiba. Kidd said, “It’s quite an extensive project that involves research, writing, and pictures.”

Toshiba hopes to use ideas from kids in their future tech- nology. Kidd explained that Toshiba makes use of kid’s ideas because they have such an imagination. Kids dream up things that adults wouldn’t consider.

The projects were complet- ed in groups of two to four stu- dents. They had to choose a piece of technology that’s in use today. Students had to research how it originated, the “history behind it, and the pre- sent status of the item. They had to come up with their own

predictions of what the future might hold for the particular piece of technology in 20 years. Then they had to explain what scientific break- throughs are needed in order for it to happen. Students also had to consider positive and negative effects their piece of technology might have if the student’s predictions come to life.

If Toshiba decides to use one of the ideas, each winning student will receive a laptop computer with the software for their piece of technology. In addition, prizes of $20,000, $10,000, and $5,000 savings bonds will be awarded. All winners will also receive a four-day ceremony in Washington D.C. as well as digital cameras.

Krause said that $31,000 had already been allocated to the senior center last year.

An additional $20,000 was coming from an agreement with CSX/NS, which was approved later in the meeting.

Treasurer Jarrod Barron confirmed Krause’s statement. He said that last year four items, including the senior center, had been allocated sep-

However, according to sources, last year the Treasurer had told the seniors that there was no money for the senior program.

Adkins continued, “It’s not that I’m opposed to the seniors having this building. I would just like answers to these ques- tions.”

Senior Director Fran Bredow then addressed the Board. She expressed irritation with Krause, claiming that she

Bredow also questioned why she had been told there was no money for the seniors not long ago when she had asked about funds to cover

SENIORS SNO BALL GA

by FRAN BREDOW

Our Senior Director, Fran Bredow, invited 35-40 Huron Township Seniors to attend an Intergenerational Sno Ball Gala. The event was held at the Romulus High School with several High School students in attendance. Our noted Township officials, Supervisor John Mitchell and wife Shirley, Trustee Nora Adkins and husband Frank, and Trustee Larry O’Kelley and wife Margaret, along with approximately 175 seniors spent the evening enjoying a delicious buffet dinner pre- pared by D.L. Caterers. This was followed by dancing the night away to music provided by the Silver Tones.

Linda Norman, Romulus Senior Coordinator said the event was the fifth year the seniors hosted such an event, “and it seems each year they get better,” said Ms. Norman.

SGT. JOHN CADY RETIRES

Sgt. John Cady has retired from the Huron Township Police Department, effective December 15, 2000. A party was held in his honor on Saturday, February 3, 2001. The party was attended by most of the present police offi- cers, dispatchers and many of the former officers who have worked with John over his 28 years of service to our commu- nity. Also in attendance were his wife and children and three granddaughters, many friends and members of the Huron Township Board. The party was planned and organized by fellow officer Terry Lindenmuth. For those of us who have known “Cady” for- ever, he was more than just a friend. He could be big, bad John if it was called for or he could be like a soft-spoken gentle Ben. He knew how to handle every situation that he faced on daily duty with the

Most of the now close-to- middle-age “kids” who grew up in Huron Township in the past 30-plus years knew JOhn, either as a baseball coach, a Huron High School Athletic Booster, a proud parent, mem- ber of the Huron School Board, or the cop who took them home to their parents instead of to jail when they got into something that they shouldn’t have.

John was one of the first men appointed to the Huron Township Police Department when it was created in 1972. Chris Maciolek Jr. was the part-time Chief of Police. We had had part-time cops for years but most of them were elected Constables who patrolled the community in their own cars. Maciolek was replaced by Harold Ashby as

CYBORGS CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY

At the February CYBORG meeting the members were treated to a lesson in black his- tory by guest speaker Nathan Head.

Mr. Head, who is employed by the UAW in the Civil Rights Department, delighted the audience with his short lessons on_ the impact that black men and women had on the United States as well as many other nations of the world.

their postage expense. She reprimanded the Board saying, “As senior director I think I should have had some say” in the plans for the center.

Bredow also said she felt that the two clubs together would not increase member- ship because currently they have nothing to offer to entice more seniors to participate.

Barbara Kreyger, president of one of the senior groups. also addressed the Board, say- ing, “We have been promised so many times a place ... I though when you were cam- paigning, you were for the seniors.”

Trustee Larry O’Kelley asked if President Kreyger felt the Krzyske Center was the best option for a temporary spot. Kreyger said, “yes,” and that she would like to see the age lowered to 50 in order to increase membership. :

After further discussion, O’Kelley said that he was not opposed to the move; howev-

er, he felt that before approv- ing the $51,500 to be spent on the temporary center that the Board should approve the spe- cific work that will be done.

O’Kelley also expressed concern about where the Township will hold its govern- ment meetings.

Clerk Dawnette Bowers then revealed that the Huron School District gave permis- sion for the Township to hold its Board meetings in the High School auditorium. The Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Commission would have use of the lecture hall.

However, the motion was carried approving $51,500 to be spent on the senior center, with no discussion of how it will be spent. Trustee O’Kelley cast the lone descending vote explaining the board should approve the proposal first and then discuss the funds. In addition, the Township will begin using the High School for meetings
